‘Don’t man up, talk it through’ men urged to confront mental health problems

In her downtime, Maduli enjoys spending time with her big ‘ohana (family), creating handmade goods with her home décor line “Hale Sweet Hale” (home sweet home); practicing Aloha ‘Aina (love of the land) through gardening and activism and dancing hula. McKenna Maduli grew up in Kalihi Valley and in Hawaiʻi’s music industry, as the daughter of industry titans Kata and Janet Maduli. The Maduli ʻohana produced memorable concerts like Mākaha Bash, and managed stars like Teresa Bright, Del Beazley, Mākaha Sons and Cyril Pahinui, just to name a few. Talk Story encourages individuals to reveal their stories in their own words and to share them with others. “Telling” refers to people saying what is historically important to them.

You’ll likely come away feeling that your vacation just got a bit more enriched and authentic. Traditionally stories were told in both formal and informal situations. Formal storytelling would usually take place in the chief’s court, where renowned orators would perform for the chief. “Talk story”, one of the great oral traditions in Hawaii is the act of sharing history, ideas, opinions and the events of the day with other people at any time and in any place. The missionaries who came to Hawaii in the late 1800’s disapproved of it but it has remained a vibrant part of the Hawaiian oral tradition.

“They continue to keep saying that people are going to try to stop me,” Skattebo said. “There’s nobody out there that can stop me. We played in 13 games, and I’ve been the target on each one, so I’m not too worried. We’re going to play our game and play ball and see what happens there. It’s a rare thing, a group of men in a room, talking about their mental health. They have all led difficult lives, and they don’t usually talk about it.

Kelce cohosts “New Heights,” a podcast with his brother, Travis, that is the third-ranked sports podcast on Apple Podcasts. Kelce’s foray into late night is just the latest of several media ventures. Featuring a country twang and personal lyrics, You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You’re Drunk was a highlight of Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Nightlife’. Those craving more of this same glorious introspection were left hanging after Hollis quietly disbanded Talk Talk following the release of Laughing Stock. In fact, many long-term fans believed he had gone to ground for good in the early 90s, and were shocked when he resurfaced, in 1998, with his lone, self-titled solo album. Proof that Hollis was serious about realising his artistic vision arrived with Talk Talk’s third album, The Colour Of Spring.

Benjamin Kuti, a soft-spoken young man, had a difficult childhood, often without his mother present. The other men agree this wouldn’t work, but all recognise the sense of isolation their physical appearance can create. This mentoring weekend, offered by the charity Oak London, is an opportunity for these men to release some of that poison. They throw a ball around the room to indicate whose turn it is to speak.

She is incredibly grateful to be doing what she loves back home and aspires to tell more of Hawaii’s stories. She was an entertainment reporter for the likes of  NBC’s Access Hollywood, MTV, VH1, Billboard Magazine’s “Billboard Live” and has interviewed some of the biggest celebrities in the world on multiple red carpets of movie premieres, award shows and events. Library programs that bring together books and inclusive representation of ethnic communities are important in building confidence in budding readers. Children need to see their own faces in contemporary characters with whom they can identify. Additionally, books, rhymes and stories from a child’s own culture allows him or her Jeff Gere to see their own heritage.

Although the group’s break-up paved the way for Talk Talk, Hollis’ new outfit came together primarily through happenstance. For the most part, we’re not accustomed in engaging in a casual conversation with strangers. So, I’d encourage you to look for opportunities to talk story in Hawaii.
